Visiting Cousins in Hopkinsville, Kentucky

My cousins Karen & Scott
had some time for a visit.

As this is our first time in southwest Kentucky, Scott decided to share Hopkinsville's history.

We spent time at the

Housed in the former Post Office,
the museum preserved the
postal windows in the entrance.

As we are in "Tobacco Country," I am very interested in tobacco farming and the tobacco industry.

A display of dried tobacco leaves
with some farm equipment.

This display shows tobacco
plants before harvesting &
different forms of tobacco.

Tightening the rein on tobacco
production in the Hopkinsville area
led to "The Tobacco Wars" in
the early 1900s.

This poster was used by the
Planters Protective Association
to oppose the Night Riders
in 1910.

Next stop - The Wood Shed
for local foods.

This homey restaurant is gearing
up for the lunchtime rush.

Smoked BBQ is big here!

I have smoked mutton with
coleslaw on a roll with
french fries.

Eric ordered a smoked mutton
sandwich & some pulled pork.

Pies to choose from for dessert
include custard pie, pecan pie,
chess pie & apple pie.

Thanks Karen and Scott for a great visit!  It was fun talking about our families over lunch.  The smoked mutton was very good and now I can brag about eating this southwestern Kentucky specialty.
