This capitol was built in the
Greek Revival style.
The cornerstone of the Capitol was laid on July 4, 1849. It was completed in 1859. Architect, William Strickland, died in 1854 and is buried in the wall, above the cornerstone. Samuel Dold Morgan, President of the Capitol Planning Commission is buried in the south wall of the Capitol.

The Tennessee State Capitol has many busts, statues and portraits. Famous Tennesseans include Civil Rights activists, former governors, US Representatives and Senators, generals and admirals.

We loved this Capitol! It is a beautiful Greek Revival building that has been carefully preserved. It is a working Capitol that presents Tennessee history, in full. Thank you, Ashley, for giving a great tour!
