Emerald Indian Mound Near Natchez, Mississippi

The Emerald Mound is just
off the Natchez Trace Parkway,
10 miles North East of Natchez.

This is the second largest Mississippian
 Indian Ceremonial Mound
 in the U.S.

The builders were ancestors
 of the Natchez.

It was built between 1250 &
 1600 AD.

The Mound covers 8 acres.

I was fascinated by the clearly
defined edging of the mound.

Archaeological evidence indicates
the Mound was used for processions,
dances & religious rituals.

There were six smaller mounds
along the edges.  All but two
have eroded away.

Evidence retrieved shows that this Mound was in active use until the late 1600s.
This area was abandoned for the Grand Village, about 12 miles Southwest of this site.
