The Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia

This is an easy State Capitol to find in downtown Atlanta.  The dome pops into view from different approaches.  Architects Willoughby J. Edbrooke and Franklin P. Burnham modeled this building after the US Capitol in Washington, DC.  Construction was finished in 1889 at the cost of one
million dollars.

This Capitol is hemmed in by many other buildings
in downtown Atlanta.

The House of Representatives
is very similar to the
Senate Chamber.

 The fourth floor has
museum exhibits.

We were fascinated by the
model of the Capitol Dome.

Eric and I were delighted by the rotunda, the galleries and grand staircases.  The wood accents warmed up the large public areas their light beige walls.  There are many portraits and statues of Georgians who shaped the history of this state.  We found the Senate Chamber and House of Representatives to be very Southern with the interior shutters to block out the sunshine and keep the rooms as cool as possible.  The museum on the fourth floor depicts Georgia's history, from earliest times through modern economic, scientific and cultural events that changed this state.

We enjoyed our self guided tour and are very aware that there is much that we walked past, not knowing its importance to Georgia and its people.  Guided tours are amazing, whether provided by volunteers or paid staff.  They provide historic context to a visit and show the pride taken in the Capitol's special place in its peoples' hearts and minds.
